On Monday, December 4 and Wednesday, December 6,
the Sixth Grade at Bird Middle School experienced an “In-house Field
Trip.” Since all classes completed a
chemistry unit, “The Physical Changes of Matter Outreach Program” from the
Acton Discovery Museum gave them a hands-on experience, at the middle
school level, right in their own classroom!
Due to the increased expense of buses and fuel charge,
it was very cost effective to bring “Traveling Science” to the classrooms. Aside from saving the cost for the bus, students were able to attend their other
academic classes on these days. The students watched with amazement as the teacher from the Discovery Museum used liquid nitrogen to freeze a banana and then use it to pound a nail into some wood. Students then performed some experiments with dry ice - totally cool!
